For my first show of 2016 I ended up finding almost another hour or so of music from 2015, most which came from albums that I didn’t play in either of my other Year-End Wrap Up shows.
Joining me in the studio that evening was DJ-in-Training Ashley, who took over control of the DJ mixing board for several songs in the second hour. She should be doing a show on her own pretty darn soon, so be on the listen for her.
For my very first jazz show (hosting the rare fifth Wednesday of the month slot at WOMR), I tried to find some cool stuff that had been released in 2015. I came up with 2 hours and then played another hour of other fun stuff that I have in my collection. I had so much fun doing this show that I offered to take over the fifth Wednesday slot whenever it came up (there are four in 2016) and wound up subbing for Yankee Dave’s “Miles to Go” show or the first month & a half of 2016.
My most humble apologies for omitting both Henry Threadgill & Zooid’s 2015 release “In For a Penny, In For a Pound” and the “Jack DeJohnette / Henry Threadgill / Richard Abrams / Larry Gray / Roscoe Mitchell live album “Made in Chcago”, both of which I have in my collection but somehow missed when building the show.
It was fun going back to the timeslot I started in way way back a whole 7 months earlier at the end of 2015. I got to do a final Gospel Brunch for the year and it gave me a chance to look back on some of the great music that came out in 2015. So much that I ended up playing a total of 6 hours of 2015 music over 3 shows and still missed several releases that I really should have included. How in the hell did I miss James McMurtry’s “Complicated Game” and Joe Ely’s “Panhandle Rambler”? Well, however it happened, it happened – too late to do anything about it now other than say “check ’em out”.
