This is another “5th Wednesday of the month” show. WOMR has alternating DJ’s for Wednesdays on weeks 1 & 3 and 2 & 4 of the month, but no one permanently on the schedule for the 5th Wednesday. I’ve enjoyed taking these 5th Wednesdays and playing jazz from my collection.
To commemorate the release of the new bio-pic “Miles Ahead” as well as a tip I heard that the next Miles Davis bootleg series collection will feature recordings from the “Miles Smiles” era, the first hour of this Omnijazz Omnibus show featured songs from “Miles Smiles” – some from the album, some played live, and some performed by other musicians.
The second hour of the show celebrated the March 30 birthdays of Norah Jones, Astrud Gilberto, and Marvin Pontiac.
Note on the recording: I forgot to start my recorder at the beginning of the show so I had to grab the beginning of this archive from the online archives at RadioFreeAmerica.com and there seem to have been a few hiccups.
We’re not ashamed – DJ Tony Scungilli & I definitely have a long-term bromance going on. The latest manifestation of this bromance has been co-hosting radio shows together. Last fall we took over Matty Dread’s “Soul Funky Train”, a week or so back we co-hosted the Saturday morning oldies show, and this week we took over Jim Mulligan’s “Mulligan Stew”. Usually we just take turns and alternate songs, sometimes we’ll talk about a plan for a set of songs ahead of time, other times we just wing it and play something that seems to make sense after the song that’s playing. The key thing is to have fun and make each other laugh (and hopefully you, the listener, too).
This was the beginning of a 2-show/5-hour slot, with DJ Tony Scungilli of “The Squid Jigger’s Blend” show joining me part way through this show after which we co-hosted Jim Mulligan’s “Mullgan’s Stew” show.
This show starts with a Gospel brunch, proceeds into a set of Soul/Funk Love songs, and later a Keith Emerson Remembrance and the return of “Fun With Fred’s Phone”. I believe it was the first FWFP of 2016 – oh, how I missed that feature!
March 2016 marks my return to the timeslot where it all started – alternate Sunday afternoons. Originally I started off doing this as a sub for Jay Harrington on his show Sitting In, then I got my own slot on alternate Monday evenings, but I always longed for a return to Sunday afternoons so I could continue on with the Gospel Brunch feature.
This was my first show back, and after the Gospel Brunch Hour at the top of the show I decided to honor International Women’s Day 2016 (March 8, 2016) with an hour plus of female-fronted funk.
It was MLK Day 2016 and the first Omnipop Omnibus show after David Bowie died, so I played tributes to both of them. Also thrown in are brief tributes to both Clarence “Blowfly” Reid and Glenn Frey as well as a couple of new-to-2016 songs. The folks in DJ Fred’s Omnipop Omnibus Facebook group seemed to enjoy the show, I hope you do, too.
I was given the opportunity to sit in for Jim Mulligan’s show “Mulligan Stew” the other day. Jim plays a great mix of blues and R&B with lots of New Orleans music. I expanded on that a bit to play a “Gospel Snack” (the show ran 4pm to 6pm, so I thought it a bit late for a full “Gospel Brunch”) and some vocal R&B/doo wop. I hope I got close to the essence of Jim’s show. I sure had a good time playing these songs for you.
For my first show of 2016 I ended up finding almost another hour or so of music from 2015, most which came from albums that I didn’t play in either of my other Year-End Wrap Up shows.
Joining me in the studio that evening was DJ-in-Training Ashley, who took over control of the DJ mixing board for several songs in the second hour. She should be doing a show on her own pretty darn soon, so be on the listen for her.
